Some information about Vaprio d'Adda

Vaprio d'Adda is an Italian municipality of 9 294 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Milan in Lombardy. It is crossed by the Martesana Canal and is included in the territory of the same name. However, one can also consider this municipality as part of Brianza.
The municipality lies halfway between Bergamo and Milan and is situated on the border between the two provinces, marked by the Adda River on the Milan side.
There are many things to see in Vaprio d'Adda, a pretty town nestled between the course of the Adda River and the Martesana Canal.
The common thread of what is possible in the area is water.
Ideal as a pleasant destination for a Sunday outing, Vaprio d'Adda offers many opportunities both for those who enjoy walking in the countryside and for lovers of culture, taking into account that Leonardo da Vinci spent much time here intent on his studies.
The list of what is worth putting on the agenda is quite long and can be completed with a visit to the Village of Crespi d'Adda, which is only a handful of kilometers away.
One notices as soon as one arrives in Vaprio d'Adda that water is the absolute protagonist. Not only does the course of the Adda River mark the territory and demarcate its boundaries, but the flow of the Martesana Canal has also influenced its history and physiognomy. The Adda River is one of Italy's most important waterways and has the distinction of flowing entirely through Lombardy. An important means of communication, the Adda is mentioned in several passages of Manzoni's Promessi Sposi, but the personality most associated with it is undoubtedly Leonardo da Vinci.
During his Lombard sojourn, the great Florentine artist spent much time in the area, a guest of his friend and disciple Francesco Melzi. The Adda was both an object of study and contemplation. The backgrounds of some of his most famous paintings have clear references to the nature of the land surrounding this waterway.Just think of the Mona Lisa or the Virgin of the Rocks.
The Martesana canal also contributes to delineating the contours of this town and characterizing it. This artificial work is linked to the greatness of the Sforza lineage. Economic but above all political purposes lead to the realization of a very ambitious project indeed, and here again the hand, and above all the ingenuity, of Leonardo did not fail to contribute.
The beauty of the landscape and the presence of a convenient waterway made Vaprio d'Adda a perfect place for vacationing. Many noble families used the river and canal banks to build their sumptuous villas. Many are still visible today. Above all, Villa Melzi d'Eril immediately catches the eye because of its elevated position. It was from here that Leonardo favored to admire the landscape and then reproduce it in his own works. The exterior appearance is rather sober and straightforward enhanced by a terraced garden that reaches to the water's edge. But there are indeed many places worth mentioning, such as Villa Monti Robecchi, Villa Visconti di Mondrone, Villa Sioli Guidoboni, Palazzo Simonetta Archinto, now the town hall, and Villa Castelbarco. Its beautiful park, which can be admired by walking along the towpath, is striking in its 'extent and huge trees.

Some information about Palazzago

Palazzago is an Italian municipality in the province of Bergamo, Lombardy, which is about 16 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of the Orobic capital. The municipality is part of the Imagna Valley Mountain Community.

The town is characterized by the numerous settlements that dot its vast territory: in addition to the main town, there are the hamlets of Collepedrino, Burligo, Acqua, Pratomarone, Precornelli, Dusnale, Cà Quarengo, Al Borghetto, Verzella, Brocchione, Longoni, Montebello, Salvano, Secchia, Beita, San Sosimo and Gromlongo.

Very important is the prepositural church of St. John the Baptist, built beginning in the 15th century and characterized by its grandeur. Paintings include the altarpiece of the Assumption, executed by Giovan Battista Moroni, and other canvases by Abramo Spinelli and Giovanni Scaramuzza. Of particular note is the so-called "Devil's Chapel," on whose ceiling Satan is depicted. The church tower, nearly fifty meters high, dates back to the 14th century and was carved from a defensive tower. It houses a bell concert of 8 bells in the key of B-flat major cast by Giorgio Pruneri of Grosio in Valtellina in 1902. The two larger, more recent bells were reinstated in 1954 by the G. B. De Poli foundry in Udine following wartime requisition in 1943. Also in the church is a Serassi organ of rare value, built in 1851 and bearing number Opus 608, which is still functioning and in use today.

Also noteworthy is the parish church in Gromlongo (one of Palazzago's hamlets), dedicated to Saints Roch and Sebastian. Dating from the 17th century, it features a splendid sandstone facade richly carved and adorned with statues by Antonio Maria Pirovano in 1731 and a pyramidal dome that characterizes the bell tower, which houses 5 bells in the key of G-flat major cast by Angelo Ottolina of Bergamo in 1947.

Also in the religious sphere, the Burligo parish church deserves mention, which, dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo, houses fine works, including altarpieces by Gian Paolo Cavagna and a 1797 Bossi organ in a prestigious wooden case of the fantoniana school, restored in 2004.

Finally, there is also Villa Belvedere, which, located in the town of the same name, has a large garden.
