Piazzatorre is an Italian municipality of 404 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy. Located in the Upper Brembana Valley, it is about 48 km north of the capital Orobico. It has a territorial surface with an altitude that varies from 850 m above sea level to 1,100 m above sea level
It has always been commonly believed that the toponym Piazzatorre derives from the union of the words piazza and torre, meaning “the square of the tower”, perhaps because a tower surrounded by an open space stood in that place.
If the etymology of the word “piazza”, audience, is plausible, this is not the case for “tower”. From the documents it is clear that the “tower” has nothing to do with the etymology of the toponym Piazzatorre, which instead should be referred to the word torus or taurus, (high ground, raised ground) which combined with platea (square, clearing) indicates raised clearing , a flat area located on high ground, which is the characteristic of Piazzatorre.
